After the paint dried and everything came together, the color reminded me of ground that's spent all summer under the sun. Dark, dry, and weathered. Before long, the name Fired Ground seemed to fit.

Built by hand from cedar fence pickets, this birdhouse lets the character of the wood remain part of the finished piece. Grain still shows through in places. Knots and natural variations are left to add their own personality rather than being covered up.

The paint settles into the cedar without making it look new or polished. Instead, it gives the house a steady, weathered look that feels right at home outdoors.

After painting, I apply two coats of exterior spar urethane to help protect the finish from the weather.

No two Fired Ground birdhouses come out exactly alike. The color and overall style stay consistent, but every board brings its own grain, texture, and character to the finished house.

This one reminds me of old fence lines, sunbaked fields, and ground that's been sitting quietly through one summer after another.
