Deep Hold

I wanted this birdhouse a little darker than some of the others. I had some raw umber paint and thought I'd see how it looked on the cedar.

The wood took the color pretty well, although some boards soaked up more than others. You could still see the grain and knots, which I liked. I wasn't trying to cover all that up.

Once I had the dark roof and hole guard on, I stood back and looked at it. There was something about that deep brown color that reminded me of the ground.

I got to thinking about how much the ground actually holds. Trees, fence posts, buildings, and just about everything else around us. We walk across it every day without giving it much thought.

And the deeper something takes hold, the harder it usually is to move.

That's where Deep Hold came from.

Funny what you can get to thinking about just standing there looking at a birdhouse.
