I've always liked old wood. Not rotten wood. Just wood that's been outside for a while. Fence boards, barn siding, old gates. The kind of boards that have seen a few seasons and quit trying to look new.
That's what this birdhouse reminded me of once it was finished. I had painted it blue-green, but the paint didn't completely cover the cedar. It caught in the grain and settled into some places more than others. When it dried, the birdhouse didn't really look new anymore.
I remember standing there looking at it and wondering how long it would take a birdhouse left outside to naturally look that way. That's when Weathered Time came to mind.
This was the first birdhouse I ever gave a name to. I didn't know it then, but it also pretty much decided how I would name the ones that came after it. I don't pick the name first. I finish the birdhouse, stand back and look at it for a while, and eventually something usually comes to me.
With this one, it was pretty simple. It looked weathered before it had ever spent a day outside.
Weathered Time.
